Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (2023)
The City of Guelph initiated a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA) as part of planning for the DTIRP project. The purpose of the EA was to enhance road safety, operations and connections for all users including cars and trucks, pedestrians, cyclists, and transit through the Wyndham Street corridor, and to improve St. George’s Square at the Wyndham/Quebec/Douglas intersection. The EA was based on earlier City plans, such as the Downtown Streetscape Manual (2014). The EA-recommended actions included:
• Full replacement of sanitary sewers, including services
• Full replacement of storm sewers
• Full replacement of water mains, including water services
• Replacement of all sidewalks and hard surfaces, including St. George’s Square
• Reconstruction of roadway, including fully mountable curb and gutter
• Full reconstruction of St. George’s Square
The EA recommended other above ground upgrades to Wyndham Street North, these included:
• Reducing the roadway to a single lane in each direction
• Maintaining the current road configuration (i.e. intersection of Wyndham, Douglas, and Quebec Streets)
• Maintaining on-street parking (parallel)
• Adding dedicated bike lanes
• Streetscaping (i.e. street trees, benches, garbage storage, public artwork)
Streetscape design
The streetscape drawings for this project were developed based on the direction of the EA, the City of Guelph’s 2014 Downtown Streetscape Manual and the Downtown Streetscaping Level of Service Workshops.
A concept design draft for St. George’s Square has been developed based on direction from the public, community partners and City staff.
